"...compelled to complement..."

The integration of the Frank O. Gehry designed building into the existing Seattle Center Campus, a former World’s Fair site north of downtown, provided many unique design opportunities. The highly sculptural architecture required a site vocabulary that complemented its features. In addition, Young + Dring needed to identify an environment immediately around the interactive music museum that provided an amplified experience for approaching visitors, a setting for informal gatherings and a venue for outdoor concerts. The design of regular and rectilinear elements creates an appealing contrast with the dynamic forms of the architecture and provides visual reference to Seattle Center's organizational grid. In collaboration with the architect, landscape components were strategically placed to form subtle edges, frame views to the visually provocative building, and offer a transition between adjacent venues within the campus.
